Discover Albariño

Albariño is a white wine grape variety that is grown primarily in the northwest region of Spain, specifically in the Rías Baixas region of Galicia. It is also grown in small quantities in Portugal and in the USA, particularly in California and Oregon.

The grape is known for producing dry, crisp, and refreshing wines with high acidity and a distinct mineral character. It is often compared to Riesling, due to its similar taste profile and high acidity. Albariño wines are typically light-bodied and have a pale straw color. They are characterized by aromas and flavors of citrus, green apple, peach, and apricot, with a hint of mineral and floral notes.

Albariño grapes are highly resistant to powdery mildew and botrytis, making them well-suited for the cool and humid climate of the Rías Baixas region. The grapes are typically harvested in September and October, and are usually fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks to preserve the grape's natural acidity and freshness.

The Rías Baixas region is divided into five sub-zones, each with its own specific terroir and microclimate. Each sub-zone produces wines with unique characteristics, and the best wines come from the Salnés, Condado do Tea, and Ribera do Ulla sub-zones. These wines are often aged for a minimum of six months, and are typically bottled under the Denominación de Origen Rías Baixas (DO Rías Baixas) designation.

Albariño wines are considered to be some of the best in Spain and are often paired with seafood, particularly shellfish, as well as with spicy Asian cuisine. The wine is best served chilled, between 10 and 12 degrees Celsius.

In recent years, Albariño has gained popularity outside of Spain, and it's being planted in other countries like the USA, South Africa and Australia. In the USA it's been found to be well suited to the cool climates of Oregon and California.
